hadley kate | 1st birthday cake smash

Ummm, Y’ALL.  I’m so excited to share this post today!  Those of you who have followed along with me for a while might realize that I’ve never photographed a cake smash session before.  This was my very first one!  Frankly, in the past, I just didn’t have the right equipment for it – or the time to research how to set myself and my clients up for success in a cake smash session – but now that I’m a full-time photographer, that’s changed!  So when little miss Hadley Kate’s mama reached out to me about doing a 1st birthday cake smash, I was totally in and we made it happen!  And it’s safe to say I had NO idea just how much fun I would have photographing a cake smash session!!!

From the very beginning of this process, I could tell Savannah (this little angel’s mama) was going to be such a joy to work with!  She told me her inspiration for the shoot was a winter wonderland, and we bounced a few ideas back and forth over email as we got closer to the session.  When the big day finally arrived, she showed up with sleek, sparkly “frosted” trees and icicle-inspired party banners and confetti balloons!!!  (Not to mention, the most adorable lace onesie and ruffly pink tutu for miss Hadley!  oh. em. gee.)

As if all of that wasn’t wonderful enough, to top it off, this little girl was SUCH a ham for the camera!  She would have been perfectly happy just playing with the balloons for an hour, but it didn’t take long (one taste of cake) for her to get the hang of things.  Before we knew it, she had cake smashed in between every little finger and all over her nose and cheeks!  And we captured all. the. faces. (and also the finger-licking) along the way!!!  I’ve had heart eyes over this session for days, and I’m SO excited to let y’all in on all the cuteness.  Enjoy my faves from this little angel’s winter wonderland cake smash session!!

p.s. I PROMISE you want to scroll all the way to the end of this one – we added “bath time” to the end of our session, and those images are, figuratively speaking, the icing on the cake of this session.  (see what I did there? 😉 )

I mean, can you even with that toothless smile??  Because I can’t.

How cute is this cake topper?!  I love how well Savannah thought all of these details through to get just the look she was going for!

I’m not going to lie, I can’t get enough of her licking the frosting off of one finger at a time!!  It’s legit the cutest.

The aftermath …

Technically, I suppose we could have ended the session there.  BUT I’m super glad we didn’t.  I had seen some cake smash sessions that included “bath time” photos at the end (after all, we have to clean all that cake off of those cheeks, don’t we??) and I already had this tin wash tub, so all we did was add some bubbles – and we got some of my favorite images from the session!

Savannah, Andy, thank you for inviting me into this season of your lives!  I had SO much fun capturing these moments for y’all!
